Princess Cut Diamond Ring

Depending on the grade, diamonds are cut in several shapes and sizes to enhance their beauty. Round brilliant cut is perhaps the most sought after cut, closely followed by the princess cut. The shape was developed by Basil Watermeyer, South Africa.

For a princess cut diamond ring the diamond should preferably be a steep rough. The shape of the stone on the surface, i.e the crown, is rectangle or square whereas the four sides are slanted, much like an inverted pyramid. The absence of a smooth pavilion leaves the diamond more vulnerable to damage. Thus the four corners of the crown are smoothed by a process known as “chamfering”.

The princess cut diamond ring defies the use of the traditional step-cut. The step-cut is usually used for square and rectangle shapes with chamfered (i.e smooth) corners. In such a shape the culet is replaced by a keel along with the length of the pavilion. The cut lacks the depth and thus, fails to provide a surface as radiant as in a princess cut diamond ring. You will mostly find princess cut diamond ring in square cut, as it allows for maximum brilliance.
A princess cut diamond ring is expensive. The cost is high due to the radiant sparkle lent by the “chevrons” in the pavilion. Additionally, the four sided pavilion increases the weight of the diamond. Lastly, a princess cut diamond ring has an extra facet which serves to enhance the natural brilliance and hides minor color variations. While buying a princess cut diamond ring,  you may want to look for a four-pronged “Startset”.

A Princess Cut Diamond ring is best teamed with a 14k white gold or a platinum band. The cost of a princess cut diamond ring hinges on certain factors. The metal used in the band and the size of the band is the first. The stone used may be a single solitaire surrounded by tiny diamonds or a set of triple diamonds set in an alternate order in respect to their size. This will be the second factor. While buying your princess cut diamond ring, it is wise to inspect the diamond for any flaws. This is important as the surface of the crown is slightly larger than the rest of the cuts and the depth along with the four facets allow ample light to pass through, thereby magnifying any flaw that may be present.

Princess cut diamond rings are beautiful things. You can gift them to your daughter, mother, sister, or if you are the soon-to-be-married type, gift your would-be spouse a princess cut diamond ring as the perfect engagement ring.
